Yogya silver dish - Indonesia
A stunning Yogya silver dish with a diameter of 28 cm and 3 cm height.
The hammered centre folds up in 16 lotus bud shapes onto a broad rim decorated with a meticulously fine repoussé of meandering stems with leaves and flowers against a chiselled and blackened background. This example belongs to the earliest examples of Yogya silver, made between 1930-1932, probably as a prototype (unmarked) for Mrs. Van Gesseler-Verschuir. A 1932 photo exists of a similar dish in the Pakarjan Ngajogyakarta shop: collectie.tropenmuseum.nl/Default.aspx?ccid=461057
For more information on Yogya silver, please see the descrition of one of my other Yogya items: www.flickr.com/photos/20375562@N02/3809429318/in/set-7215...
I want to thank antique dealer Kasper Tiggeloven for the opportunity to buy these 2 wonderful Yogya silver items. When in Amsterdam, do visit his stand B1A @ the Antiekcentrum Amsterdam: www.antiekcentrumamsterdam.nl
