Antares - Rho Ophiuchi

One of the most colorful parts of the night sky: the Rho Ophiuchi cloud complex.

The orange star is Antares, a supergiant nearing the end of its life. It illuminates the interstellar clouds of gas and dust, parts of which are very dense and appear dark because starlight can't go through.

The other stars are white/blue - their temperature is much higher.

In the 6 o'clock position is Messier 4 - a globular cluster of thousands of stars.

Around, red hydrogen emission nebulae.

This is a 1-hour exposure with a 6Da camera + 300mm f/4 lens.
