Statue of Æthelflæd, Lady of the Mercians.

As the plinth says to commemorate the Millennium of the building of the Castle Mound at Tamworth (capital of Mercia in Saxon times). The monument was designed by H. C. Mitchell and sculpted by E. G. Bramwell. It depicts Æthelflæd with her nephew Æthelstan, who would go on to be the first king of a united England.
