Blue Mussels © Cormac Mac Mahon

Blue mussels are economically and environmentally important filter-feeding bivalves. Blue mussels have been important as food for humans for thousands of years and mussel harvesting dates back centuries. Blue mussel shells have been found in kitchen middens dated at 6000 B.C. and until the 19th century, blue mussels were harvested from wild beds in most European countries for food, fish bait and used as fertilizer.
