The Great Spotted Woodpecker has made a remarkable comeback in Ireland, becoming a relatively common sight in many counties. It was once absent from the island but has since expanded its range eastward and westward, now present in most counties. This expansion has been particularly noticeable in areas with broadleaved woodland, their preferred habitat.
