Black-headed gulls are known for their seasonal "hoods" (dark brown heads in breeding season, replaced by dark spots behind the eyes in winter) and their tendency to form large, noisy colonies. They are also surprisingly adaptable, found in various habitats including city centers and farmland.
The dark hood is a temporary feature, appearing only during the breeding season to attract mates. It's more prominent and defined in males.
