The artist I chose to replicate for this assignment is Diane Arbus. I knew she would be a popular choice, but I was simply drawn to the way she captured controversial topics as well as raw unfiltered emotion. For this photo, I attempted to employ the lighting she favored. I noticed that she liked to highlight shadows on her subject’s face as well as in the background behind them. She also emphasized the subject rather than the backdrop which was another thing I tried to add. I also liked that she chose to emphasize her subjects by using makeup or accessories to further add to the point she was trying to make (in a time where men were vetoed for actions like those, she celebrated them). The subjects normally held rather neutral expressions over a smile or a frown, and it was almost as if she was trying to make it so they were simply existing in the frame, rather than performing, which I tried to incorporate. Lastly, I added the black and white filter from my Lumix S9 camera as Diane Arbus’ work highlighted that.
