UP 4014 Nathan 4000 cold water injector upon return from use on the AFT 4449

PLEASE SEE ALL THE PICS IN THE “UP4014 BIG BOY” ALBUM.

The story most folks probably don’t know about is when the American Freedom Train (AFT) pulled into the Los Angeles Fairgrounds in Pomona CA (Dec1975) the crew of Doyle McCormick, Andy Anderson, and Al Phillips contacted the Railway and Locomotive Historical Society (RLHS) exhibit there at the fairgrounds asking if they could come over and take a look at the UP 4014’s injector.

From 1974-80 I was the caretaker for the 4014 and along with Bill Fletcher, the president of the Southern California chapter for the RLHS, we met the three of them (I lucked out as it was the holiday break from high school at the time) where they examined the Nathan 4000 cold water injector. Apparently the 4449’s injector had a crack and the repairs they had made to it weren’t holding up. They liked what they saw so the next day they returned with tools in hand, and off it came.

I felt most fortunate that they invited me over to the 4449 to watch them swap injectors. So the UP 4014 injector stayed on the engine all the way back to Portland after its AFT duties. Not surprising they reported they never had a water delivery problem using the oversized injector. We then received it back on a pallet and had a hell of a time putting it back on 4014. I’m not even sure if the current 4014 UP steam group knows this piece of 4014 history. Pic is from a 48-year-old slide.
