Saab 105Ö (c/n 105423)
Österreichische Luftstreitkräfte
Dübendorf Airbase (LSMD)
14 July 2005
The Austrian Air Force operated a total of 40 export versions of the Swedish Saab 105 jet trainer. Designated as Saab 105Ö in OeLSK service, they were used for jet training, light attack, reconnaissance, liaison and air sampling (radioactivity monitoring). Deliveries started in July 1970, and the type was officially struck off charge in December 2020.
The 40 aircraft were internally serialled as 1101-1140, but these serials were not normally painted on the aircraft. Instead, each airframe received a one letter code in different colours. The aircraft depicted was serialled 1123 and coded "C red", and was captured flaring for runway 29 on a very rare visit to Dübendorf Airbase.
After being struck off charge, C red was preserved as an instructional airframe at the Höhere Technische Bundeslehranstalt Eisenstadt. The S.105s will eventually be replaced by 12 new-built Leonardo M.346FAs, with deliveries to begin in 2027.
