EC-BSE ¦ ZRH 11.10.1981

Douglas DC-8-63 (c/n 46155/529)

Aviaco (Aviación y Comercio)

Zürich-Kloten (ZRH/LSZH)

11 October 1981

This Super DC-8 was built as EC-BSE for Iberia in 1970, and in April 1981 was transferred to partner airline Aviaco, which was founded in 1948 and initially operated regional passenger services, mainly in northern Spain.

With the acquisition of DC-8s and DC-9s, Aviaco operated a growing number of charter services, mainly from Palma and Las Palmas. The DC-8-63s were used on high-densitiy charters, and became regulars at Zürich.

EC-BSE was captured firmly touching down on runway 28 on a windy afternoon, completing a charter from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. It carried an elegant revised livery and 1982 FIFA World Cup insignias, and was named "Playa de las Canteras", after the famous Las Palmas urban beach.

EC-BSE's career with Aviaco was rather short, as in 1983 it was sold to the USA, and was later converted to a freighter for Airborne Express/ABX Air. By 2005 the DC-8 was withdrawn from use at Cincinnati, and eventually broken-up there.
