Hawker Siddeley HS.780 Andover C.1 (Set No.9)

748 Air Services

Auckland-International (AKL/NZAA)

17 September 1998

The Andover is a development of the successful HS.748 airliner with an upswept rear fuselage, a rear loading ramp and a unique kneeling landing gear to ease loading. A total of 31 of the C.1 variant were built for the Royal Air Force, of which ten were eventually sold to the Royal New Zealand Air Force.

This particular Andover was built as XS602 for the Royal Air Force in 1966, and joined the RNZAF as NZ7622 in early 1977. When the type was struck off charge in 1998, many were sold to the civil market, including NZ7622, which was acquired by Nairobi-based 748 Air Services.

Conveniently registered in Equatorial Guinea as 3C-KKB for operations in conflict zones like Sudan or the DRC , it was seen at Auckland, still in former RNZAF colours, and ready for delivery to Africa. In March 2003 3C-KKB was written-off during a crash landing at Rumbek, Sudan, while delivering relief supplies.
