EC-BRQ ¦ 17.06.1984

Boeing B.747-256B (c/n 20137/173)

Iberia

Zürich-Kloten (ZRH/LSZH)

17 June 1984

1971-built EC-BRQ was one of over 20 Boeing 747s in service with the Spanish flag carrier over the decades, but was not normally seen in Zürich. In the eighties, however, Iberia sometimes substituted a 747 on DC-9 or B.727 services from Madrid, and also operated a few charter flights with their 747s.

This made EC-BRQ paying a rare and welcome visit to Zürich, when on this day it operated a charter service, and was subsequently seen climbing out of runway 16 on departure. It was named "Calderón de la Barca", after Spanish 17th century dramatist, poet and writer Pedro Calderón de la Barca y Barreda González de Henao Ruiz de Blasco y Riaño.

EC-BRQ was in service with Iberia for all its life, save a short lease out to Corsair, and the fact that in 1995 it became EC-765 and then EC-GAG, but still with Iberia. It was eventually retired at Madrid in March 2003, and broken-up there a few months later.
