XT-610 ¦ Datangshan 08.10.1995

Convair CV.240-14 (c/n 131)

CATC (Central Air Transport Corporation)

China Aviation Museum, Datangshan, Beijing

08 October 1995

The China Aviation Museum is a large museum in the Datangshan region of Beijing, open to the public since late 1989, and affiliated with the PLAAF (People's Liberation Army Air Force) and the Aviation Industry Corporation of China. It holds several hundred exhibits, many of them military, with emphasis on the Korean War and the Cold War.

There are also some civil exhibits, like this Convair 240, which was seen in a fairly well condition minus its engines, and painted in CATC colours as XT-610. XT- today is of course the prefix for Burkina Faso, but historically in the 1930s and 1940s, this prefix was used by China and Taiwan.

XT-610 was delivered to Central Air Transport Corporation of Taiwan in April 1949, but was captured by the PLAAF in November that year, and transferred to CAAC (Civil Aviation Administration of China) as 401. It is unclear when it was retired, but later it was reported stored at Beijing, and in 1989 it was eventually repainted in CATC colours and put on display at the Datangshan museum. Recent images show it to be still on display at the museum, still without its engines, but otherwise fairly intact.
