SATA was a Swiss charter company based at Geneva, which started as an air taxi operator in 1966, and had grown to a fleet of four Caravelles and three DC-8s by 1977. Included in the fleet was Caravelle 10R HB-ICK, which was built for ALIA Royal Jordanian in 1965 and joined the SATA fleet in 1973.
HB-ICK was easily recognizable as being the only Caravelle in the fleet with silver engine pods, while the other three had white pods. HB-ICK was captured taxiing on Alpha towards runway 28 for an early morning departure. Casually pointing the camera at the Caravelle while waiting for something more interesting, no one would have thought that this could be last occasion for a decent shot of this airframe.
28 days later, HB-ICK was on a night approach to runway 06 at Funchal, Madeira, coming in too low when the crew lost sight of the runway lights at the end of the downwind leg, and the Caravelle touched the sea soon after the base leg turn, with gear and flaps down. 21 of the 57 occupants survived the crash, which was the beginning of the end of SATA as it ceased operations in summer 1978 and was replaced by a new company called CTA.
