N5820 ¦ ANC 29.06.1986
Convair CV.580 (c/n 62)
Seair Alaska Airlines
Anchorage-International (ANC/PANC)
29 June 1986
Bulit as a piston Convair CV.340-32 for Braniff in 1953, this Convair Liner was converted to a turboprop CV.580 in early 1967, and eventually acquired by Sea Airmotive in 1978, becoming Seair Alaska Airlines in 1984.
Registered N5820, it was seen impounded at Anchorage with a bunch of sisterships and a line of Twin Otters, after Seair went out of business in 1985. The aircraft were guarded and when I took my photos, I was approached by a guard and asked what I was doing. Normally in the US at that time nobody cared when you were walking around aircraft with a camera around your neck. N5820 had small paper notices near the doors that it was impounded, and I was told okay for photos, but the aircraft must not be touched!
After the Convair was repossessed by the lessor in August 1986, it flew in Canada, again the USA, and eventually Colombia from early 1990. Sometime after that it returned to the USA as N5820 and flew with Trans Air Link from around 2002. In 2004 it was reported stored at Opa Locka, where it was broken-up in late 2007.
