6W-SAC ¦ DKR 28.02.1986

Douglas C-47 (c/n 6207)

Armée de l'Air Sénégalaise

Dakar-Yoff International (DKR/GOOY)

28 February 1986

Built with fiscal year 1941 money and deliverd to the USAF in early 1943, this Dakota ended up in France in 1945, shortly flew with Air France, and was eventually transferred to Senegal, becoming 6W-SAC with the Senegalese Air Force in mid-1963.

Sometime after that it was retired at Yoff airport, and was seen in early 1986 parked in the weed, covered in Sahara dust and rotting away, still carrying part of its former USAF serial 41-38748 in fin. Given the overall dire appearance, retirement was probably a fair while before the photo was taken.

6W-SAC was reserved as F-GEFX for Aéro Stock, Le Bourget, in November 1986, but cancelled in September 1990 as "sold as spares to the UK". In fact the airframe was no longer airworthy, and after Yoff airport became Léopold Sédar Senghor in 1996, and, after the new Blaise Diagne airport opened in 2017, Yoff/Senghor was downgraded to a charter/cargo/military only airport, a major cleanup removed most of the derelict aircraft that were scattered around Yoff in the 1980s. While the exact fate of this C-47 is unknown, it is probably safe to assume that after any useful parts were removed, it was broken-up during the cleanup at Yoff.
