Tethered
Medium: Crocheted metal wire, metal and plastic beads, metal chain
Year: 2024
Description: Like the crocheted wire itself, the concept behind this piece has several layers. I was inspired by both chainmail armor, as well as traditional Indian wedding jewelry, using crocheted wire to mimic the first and form it to look like the second. I explore these juxtapositions of metal by using it as the primary medium for the piece; for protection, strength, and beauty. These contrasting masculine and feminine stereotypes are presented together instead of against each other. This shows their contrasts and similarities; the wedding jewels that I am inspired by are traditionally quite heavy, and uncomfortable to wear, much like armor. Girls may now see this expectation of being uncomfortable on their wedding day as unfair and even oppressive. Therefore by presenting the jewelry as a form of strength, I aim to remind young women of their strength under similar harsh stereotypes.
