About five years ago I was diagnosed with celiac sprue. It is an auto-immune disease which causes the lining of your small intestine to shrink, resulting in an inability to absorb nutrition. A protein in gluten activates the reaction, so that all foods containing wheat, rye, or barley must be avoided. Nutritionists advise that, if you do not have a significant medical problem, it is not advisable to go on a gluten-free diet. If you are celiac, you have no choice.
