Dahmmayangyi Phaya is infamous for its mysterious bricked-up inner passageways and cruel history. Legend says King Narathu built the temple to atone for his sins: he smothered his father and brother and executed one of his wives, an Indian princess, for practising Hindu rituals. It is also said the king ordered that the mortarless brickwork fit together so tightly even a pin could not pass between two bricks. Workers who failed in this task had their arms chopped off. After Narathu was assassinated, the inner corridor was filled with brick rubble, possibly to stop the massive structure from collapsing and the sikhara at the top was never completed and remains a stub. This is one of the few temples not to have undergone major restoration, maybe due to its bad karma.
