Dunster Castle, situated on a wooded hill above the village of Dunster, has been a fortified site since the Norman period. While retaining medieval elements, its current form reflects substantial 19th-century remodelling during its time as the main residence of the Luttrell family, who lived there for over six centuries. The estate features terraced gardens with Mediterranean and subtropical planting, riverside woodland, and a historic working watermill, with views across the Bristol Channel.

The River Avill, originating on the western slopes of Dunkery Hill at around 410 metres above sea level, flows approximately 16 kilometres eastward through several valleys and settlements—including Wheddon Cross and Timberscombe—before passing through the grounds of Dunster Castle. It ultimately reaches the Bristol Channel at Dunster Beach.
