Russian Orthodox Church of St. Elizabeth, Wiesbaden
Perched atop Wiesbaden’s Neroberg hill, the Russian Orthodox Church of St. Elizabeth, also known as the Griechische Kapelle, was built between 1847 and 1855 by Duke Adolf of Nassau in memory of his wife, Grand Duchess Elizabeth Mikhailovna of Russia. The church features five gilded onion domes, or “heads”, designed to draw the eye upward, symbolising a connection to the divine. Its richly decorated interior includes a marble tomb dedicated to the Grand Duchess. Adjacent lies a historic Russian Orthodox cemetery, one of the largest in Europe outside Russia.
