Utah Badlands

The badlands of Utah are a very dry region where the terrain is composed of extensively eroded rocks and soil. Ravines, gullies, buttes, and hoodoos are in greater abundance than vegetation. Over the eons, water has sculpted the land, carving out deep drainage channels and creating short, steep ridges. Within just one square mile, there can be between 50-750 miles of drainage channels. Needless to say, traversing the region is difficult. Between the sculpted landforms and the changing light, photographic opportunities are endless. In this image, I took advantage of the lower light angle created by the setting sun which cast shadows that helped to highlight the contours of the lands. I deliberately kept the sun just outside the left frame to keep it from being too much of a distraction from the sculpted shapes that I carefully chose a perspective that would create a bowl shape whose shape and lines would be oriented towards the sun enhancing view eye movement.
