Antelope Canyon Lightfall

Nestled in the arid landscape of Arizona, Antelope Canyon is a geological marvel. It is a slot canyon with walls of smooth flowing contours and sinuous shapes. They were carved by water draining from heavy rains and flash floods as it gushed through the canyon. The waters carried sand that literally sandblasted the soft sandstone walls. When drained, winds through the narrows continue to sweep the walls clean of loose sand and polishing the surfaces.

While the undulating walls are layered and colored in soft, warm hues, photographing them by natural light is challenging. The canyon is so narrow that sunlight beams directly down to the floor for only a couple of hours during a few months of the year. When it does, magic happens as the light beams seem to dance through the dust-laden air and bring out the contours in the walls.
