Black-browed Albatross Colony
This image of a black-browed albatross colony in the Falkland Islands has won numerous environmental awards. The species is listed as endangered thanks to global warming. Their primary food source lives only at certain cool/cold temperature ranges in the south Atlantic. As the waters are warming the krill moves to lower depths to survive. Unfortunately, albatross have a limit on how deep they can dive so their food is becoming unattainable, and the species population is dropping. I can see it in the number of empty nests that are present in the nesting site. With little predation and a tolerance for the few human visitors that arrive on the more remote islands, wide angle photography can be possible without stressing the birds or interrupting the hatching process. Shooting the birds just sitting on nests did not make for great scene dynamics. While shooting in a vertical orientation, I just had to wait for a bird to fly into the frame. It took time and patience, but I was rewarded in the end.
