Looking Out Upon Infinity
Looking Out Upon Infinity
The Neist Point Lighthouse on the western shores of the Isle of Skye is a well-known island landmark. Though well photographed, it presents a challenge for creating an image that speaks toward a sense of place more than just a feature image of the lighthouse itself. Creating an eye-catching image that displays the large openness of the region in which the lighthouse is located requires a wide-angle lens or panoramic stitching using several images. This image is a four shot stitch. It also takes the right light, sky, sea conditions, and time of day to set the mood for the scene. To show movement in the clouds and to smooth the ocean surface, an eight second exposure was used. Using a wider angled lens for the stitched frames greatly diminished the size of the lighthouse setting its scale against the vast distances it looks out to sea at.
