Rushing To Dinner

Rushing To Dinner

While this is a full-grown grizzly bear, it is still young and inexperienced. Seems as though it was not paying enough attention during mom’s fish catching lessons. Rather than wait quietly for a salmon to swim up close and then make a grab for it, this one chose to try to chase down one that it spotted near the surface some distance away. Its body language telegraphed its intent, so I set my focus, shutter speed, and framing and just waited for the charge. Understanding the natural history and behavior of the animal gave me enough information to be prepared. Timing was everything as in a matter of seconds the bear was out of the frame. The targeted salmon? The noise of all the splashing tipped it off and it easily escaped being a meal and the bear stayed hungry and maybe a little better educated.
