The Lonely Tree of Quiraing

The Lonely Tree of Quiraing

There are few trees to be found in the Quiraing mountains, Isle of Skye, Scotland. This one chose a very precarious location to make home as it hangs onto the cliff edge and survives despite the harsh Scottish, mountain weather. I could have chosen to shoot this from higher up on the hillside but by doing so looking down on the tree would have reduced its visual weight and size. Instead, I chose to clamber further down to get a more tree-eye perspective. That position strengthened the visual importance of the tree compared to the surrounding landscape and mountain formations and created better eye movement and balance in the frame. The downside was that the tree blocked the two lakes below from being stronger design elements.
