Long Cool Woman (in a Black Dress)

She walked into the smoky haze of the club like she owned the place, all long legs and a black dress that clung to her like a second skin. I was supposed to be watching the table in the corner, where the deal was going down, but my eyes had other ideas. She moved with a confidence that turned heads and started fights, every step a quiet dare. I told myself it was just her connection to the case that caught my attention, but the tightening in my chest knew better. When the bust went down and chaos erupted, she didn’t flinch—not once. As cuffs snapped on wrists and shouts filled the room, I found her by the exit, calm as a cat in the sun. She took my hand without hesitation. I shook the D.A.'s hand and said, "She's with me," then led her out into the night.
