PERT Tower: Sustainable Safety
I took this photo on November 21, 2024, at the University of Maryland campus near the physics building. This photo captures one of the 300 or more emergency PERT (Public Emergency Response Telephones) towers strategically positioned around the campus grounds. These towers are under the management of UMDs Department of Public Safety. Come equipped, with strobe lights that activate upon pressing an emergency button to make their location easily noticeable by responding officers. Each tower offers a line connecting to UMD police dispatchers who can swiftly respond within a minutes. Typically averaging a 2 to 3 minute turnaround time. The system is also linked to the campus security network, at UMD that operates round the clock surveillance. The image showcases the essence of UN Sustainable Development Goal 16 (Promoting Peaceful and Inclusive Societies). This is achieved by featuring infrastructure that enhances safety and fosters transparency. The ecological theme illustrated revolves around human environment relationships and flexible governance. Exemplified by the integration of the emergency system within the campus environment, amid trees and green spaces while delivering safety measures. This setup shows how safety measures can be put in place without compromising the aspects such, as soil quality and plant life that are essential, for the diversity of urban areas and the health of ecosystems.
