Hayloft

When this barn was built in the early 20th century, hay bale implements weren’t a thing and hay was put up in bulk in its loose form. You needed a pitchfork and lots of time to move a lot of hay. These ropes are part of a pulley system used to lift hay into the loft using horses for power (1-2 horse power). The ropes haven’t moved since I moved to the farm in 1997 and I don’t imagine they moved for at least 50 years before that. It’s cool all that infrastructure is still in place. When I was a kid we put up 1023 small-square bales into this barn. It took us about 3 days of work. It was hot.
