End view of WHOE / CCS 10007 Caboose in Shelbyville TN

Walking Horse & Eastern Railroad caboose (WHOE 10007) in Shelbyville, Tennessee. It sits stored on a sidetrack and is slowly being overgrown with vegetation. WHOE 13438 caboose sits close by. Both cabooses have been on the sidetrack since at least 1992 (from aerial imagery).

Walking Horse & Eastern is a short-line freight railroad that connects Shelbyville, TN to Wartrace, a 7.76 mile run. It has been operating on this line since 1985.

This is a cupola (standard) steel caboose with a colorful past. It once belonged to the Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad (ATSF) as caboose number 2159 and then 999486. The “486” is still visible on the cupola. At some point it belonged to the Chicago South Shore & South Bend Railroad (CSS 10007), which hauls freight in Chicago and Northwest Indiana, before being acquired by WHOE.

The outside of the caboose has been defaced but otherwise not noticeably changed since its railroad days. The inside has been burnt and trashed but still retains much of its original furnishings and fixtures. Although this caboose appears abandoned, it is on railroad property.
