Yellow-crowned Night Heron Coping with Texas Heat, or, Heck if I Know!
Oddly enough, these birds FACE the sun and do this. My guess is that the lighter-colored side that faces the sun reflects the heat some and maybe this posture reduces the insulating properties of the feathers. My guess only.
