The afternoon was calm in the village, so quiet you could listen to the wind moving around the training yard.
A man stood there by himself, a knife on his hand, shining. Too clean. Too sharp for the place it was immersed in.
Things went still for a moment, but it was not peace, just the sort of silence that makes you pay attention.
Suddenly a voice snapped it in half.
"Get out! Get out right now!"
The man exhaled once, steady.
A wooden door slammed open and four men came out, their armor making noise as they moved across the yard.
One of them had a bit of sulight hit his breastplate, bright enough that the man had to blink and look away for a second.
When he opened them again, all four were staring him down.
"Look at this, boss" one of them sneered.
"A lad playing soldier. Tell me, boy… you really think you can stand against us?"
The man didn’t answer. He just looked at them, jaw tight, fingers curling a little harder around the knife handle.
The taller one stepped closer, smirking.
“Listen, boy. I could open your throat right here and no one would blink. But I’m feeling generous today. Walk away, and you walk away alive.
Stay… and you’d better accept the outcome.”
The man breathed in slowly, trying to steady himself. His chest felt tight, like the air suddenly wasn’t enough.
But he didn’t step back.
“No.”
“I’ve been running my whole life. Not anymore.”
