That night, the moon was shining brighter than I ever saw before.

I felt enveloped by a calm. One so still that not even the birds dared to sing and break it.

I was assigned to investigate the disappearances that had been happening in the town.

Each year, more than fifty people vanished without leaving a trace.

 

Police investigated the case several times, thinking a serial killer might be involved,

but they never found any clues.

Locals started believing it was some kind of cult. Something related to sacrifices.

Others that something more evil existed within the lake.

Something supernatural.

 

Some people claimed that they saw the water turning into purple on full moon nights.

Others swore to have seen something swimming inside. Something far bigger than a fish.

 

So there I was, skeptical and calling myself a fool for even considering it.

I started searching by the shore.

The water was still, clearer than I expected.

It was so dark that my flashlight barely reached a few meters ahead before dissolving into black.

No sound. No frogs. No animals at all. Nothing.

Just me and the lake.

 

I took a few shots of the surface, marked coordinates, collected samples.

Just like I always did.

Suddenly, the moonlight shifted, and I felt something. It was like the lake itself had exhaled.

I must be imagining things. I told myself.

But then I leaned closer… and saw it.

 

A big eye beneath the water.

The lake is staring at me??

I hit myself in the face several times, but it was still there.

It wasn’t a trick of light. This was different.

It felt like the lake was alive somehow.

 

My heart started beating faster. I knew I couldn’t stay there any longer.

I took a few shots before turning off my camera. I had to document it somehow.

I switched off the flashlight and everything went dark for a second.

Then the lake began to glow. Violet lines crawling across the surface like veins pulsing under skin.

I saw a humanoid figure swimming right beneath the eye.

 

The calm I felt minutes ago turned into tension.

Right under my feet, a tentacle broke the surface and tried to grab me.

I barely pulled free and stumbled backward, terrified.

I grabbed my things, turned around, and ran as fast as I could.

 

When I developed the photos later, they were all blank. Every single one.

I filed the report anyway.

 

The department closed the case and called it inconclusive.

But every time a new disappearance is reported and the map points to that place,

I wonder if what I saw that night was real… or if the lake is still waiting for me to find out.
