Bar-tailed Godwit on lookout

Seeing a bar-tailed godwit sitting on a post can really mean only one thing: their young must be foraging nearby. From the moment they hatch, they have to find their own food. Where the adults prod the ground in search of worms, hatchlings have to catch insects, ever under the watchful eyes of their parents. A single call from the adult birds will have them rush for cover and stay motionless to avoid the gaze of their predators. These sights have become more and more rare unfortunately, with habitat loss resulting in a serious decline in godwit and other meadow bird numbers.
