GraybillEmma-Weston

For this photo assignment I took inspiration from and tried to replicate the photographs of Edward Weston. More specifically, I decided to replicate his photos of fruits and vegetables. I was instantly inspired when I saw his original photographs, I really enjoyed the crispness and quality of them as it was especially eye-catching. This is something that I saw in the original photos that I tried to replicate in my own work. Additionally, I enjoyed Weston's technique of having his fruits at the center of his photograph, which I employed in my own photo, because it draws the viewers full attention onto the fruit. Another aspect of the original photos that I tried to replicate was Weston's use of a dark background behind the fruit or vegetable he was photographing. I achieved this by placing a black paper bag on the floor and propping the sliced apples I used against a black shoebox. I really enjoy the contrast this creates against the Apple in my photograph. An additional element I noticed in Weston’s photography was the modernist technique of taking a close-up image. I think the closeness of his images really helped to enhance the clarity of them and make them almost more interesting to the eye. Finally, I noticed his photos were high contrast So I held a flashlight above the apples to really bring out the lights and darks. In post production, I decided to change the image to black and white so that I could further replicate the style of photographs that Edward Weston produced. Overall, this was a very fun and entertaining assignment, I really enjoyed turning an everyday food into a beautiful and creative piece of art
