SQA HIGHER EXAM PORTFOLIO

The brief stated that the focus of my design should be on exploring various textures and motif development. I felt that sea urchins were highly textured with interesting patterns for motif development. They had the potential for a dramatic and busy corset which would be eyecatching at a catwalk event. I established my colour palette early on, focussing on nuetrals to a varied range of blues.I feel that this limited palette allowed me to explore texture, pattern and shape effectively.

From some source drawings I developed simplified motif designs and at this stage I decided that the main focus of my corset would be a repetitive circular motif. was keen to push my design into a more Avant Garde style as stated in my brief. I discovered the British designer Jack Irving who made a dress inspired by sea urchins for Lady Gaga. This inspired me to consider adding dramatic 3Dimensional shapes to my design.

I really pushed my exploration of textiles techniques to explore texture. I really enjoyed the textural effect of using a wood burner I created holes in Typo paper torepresent the Holes in the sea urchin shells at different sizes really pushed my exploration of textiles techniques to explore texture. I really enjoyed the textural effect of using a wood burner I created holes in Typo paper torepresent the varied sizes of the circles I had observed on a sea urchin shell.

I also explored a surface manipulation technique in which I free handed simplified urchin circles with a hot glue gun. I found the scale and structure of these dramatic so I created a shoulder piece out of them. I felt this suited the brief requirement for Avant Garde style.

I felt that my most successful materials and techniques I would take forward into my final were Suffolk puffs (which looked like a fabric version of sea urchins,) couched lines and circular applique on handmade felt (to represent the zoomed in details on an urchin shell) and netting to represent the source of how sea urchins come out of the ocean. • A number of paper mock-ups helped me to understand ergonomics and establish the size and scale of my motif designs. I decided that my mockup with large and small scale circular motifs was the most eye-catching and detailed, making it more suitable for a catwalk.

I also tried fabric transfer crayons, drawing some motifs onto photo copying paper which I ironed onto plain polyester to make my own fabric sample. I loved the outcome but I chose not to use it in my final outcome as my design was in danger of becoming too busy.

•In my final pece, I focussed on panel ideas aiming to strike a balance that was busy, exhibiting a variety of different textures, whilst also feeling organised and not too

fussy.

went to a sewing course and learned how to use a sewing machine. This meant That I could connect the panels together quickly.

The Irving inspired spikes at the bottom of the corset proved too heavy so I added the dramatic shoulder instead for the Avant-Garde element. really liked my final outcome and felt that I met the requirements of my design brief but with more time, I would have added more felt to the design or made it more dramatic.
