Opportunities to join a Military Academy

San Juan, Puerto Rico- Dozens of high school students, who are interested in joining one of the nation’s military academies, participated in the US Service Academy Roundtable, hosted by the Puerto Rico Congressional Office, Oct 18, 2012.

The roundtable had the purpose of helping the students in the application process.

Representatives from West Point, the Air Force Academy, the Naval Academy, the Coast Guard Academy and the Merchant Marine Academy were present at the event to explain the admission process, the academic and physical standards, the daily life at the academies and the obligations and opportunities after graduation.

“The fact that you are here contemplating this course of action says a lot about you. It shows that you are highly motivated, that you want to challenge yourselves and that you are brave,” said Congressman Pedro Pierluisi during his opening remarks.

Applicants to all Service Academies, except the Coast Guard Academy, are required to obtain a nomination to the school. For students in Puerto Rico, the nomination is made by the Resident Commissioner.

Brig. Gen. Fernando Fernandez, the senior Army Reserve officer in the Caribbean, was also present during the event.

“Even if you do not get recommended to one of the Academies through the regular process, you can still pursue a career as an officer through the Army Reserve. The Army Reserve gets additional nominations to West Point,” said Fernandez.

According to Fernandez, the command of the Army Reserve in United States gets 90 seats at West Point every year. Most of these seats are not filled.

Last year, Spec. Ryne Aaron Flores became the first soldier from the local command being accepted to the West Point preparatory school, after being recommended by Fernandez.

Flores is now part of the 2016 West Point class.
