Inspiring true warriors

San Juan, P.R. - Soldiers from the U.S. Army Reserve Puerto Rico visited the patients of the San Jorge Children’s Hospital in San Juan, PR, Dec 12, to honor their fighting spirit, and encouraging them to never quit on their treatment.

“We come here to honor these children who are fighting cancer. They are true warriors and we pay our respects to them and their families,” said Brig. Gen. Dustin A. Shultz, senior federal Army officer in the Caribbean.

Meanwhile, the patients’ family members welcomed the soldiers with open arms.

“I feel grateful and happy, because you as soldiers bring happiness and joy to my son and inspire him to keep fighting and not to quit on his battle,” said a tear-eyed Clarissa Vega, whose son, Chrisyadiel Quezada Vega is currently receiving treatment at the hospital.

The hospital staff also had welcoming words to the troops.

“On behalf of the hospital, we are very grateful for your visit. The best gift that we can give to a human being is a smile. Thank you very much for being here. God bless,” said Patricia Calderon from the hospital’s marketing department.

This initiative is part of the Army Reserve-Puerto Rico outreach efforts, with the intent of reconnecting with the local communities.
