CuriositiesThe Lost 40_1914
A stone I never noticed before at a national park I often visit. The stone stood out along the path in the melting snow.
Etched in 1914, got me thinking of the world at the time. The lost 40 refers to the parcel of land that was privately owned at the time but would one day become the core of the park.
The line quoted would've been from a new poem released only a year earlier from a newly converted Joyce Kilmer, "Poems are made by fools like me. But only God can make a tree."
The first world war in human history was just getting underway, probably not even called that yet. Kilmer, was yet to enlist and be sent into combat.
Unknown to the stone etcher, within 4 years, just a few months before the end of the war, Kilmer would be killed by a German sniper's bullet, never to write again. -That stone leaves a lot to think about!
