Hustle and Bustle

Lloyd Center, the biggest mall in Portland, has fell on some hard times. Over the last decade, I occasionally walk through this mall only to be greeted with hundreds of empty store fronts and a few holdover shops that are clinging to life.

Recently though, that's changed. The high availability pushed the cost of rent down enough that now the mall is partially full of small independent local shops, giving the mall a feel closer to a bazaar than a traditional American mall. Things like local comics to a free museum about the regions history. On this visit, there was some kind of trading card event going on that spanned the entire lower floor and drew hundreds of people.

It's nice to see local businesses reclaim such a local icon.
