You just can't walk into Duisburg without there being someone playing the guitar. It was like that way back then at the central station almost every time, and now here it's the same thing. Only the audience is much bigger here. And also getting slightly nervous because what they're really doing, is wait for the gong that announces the movie in the open air cinema will begin shortly, and now there's guitar guy playing.
Then the gong comes, and within a few minutes everybody's disappeared up the stairs. I didn't know they had a cinema here, so I didn't have a ticket, but by virtue of the venue being open air, I could still hear what was happening in there. First, trailers of course. Most I couldn't tell what they were about, but I noted one for a sequel to the Gladiator movie. Which as far as I know, has been released a few years ago already, but whatever.
I couldn't help thinking, they're probably doing it wrong. They probably don't even have a team Blue and team Yellow! No weapons that you can't shoot if you aim them at someone's head or torso. Because dead gladiators make bad celebrities, you know! No slabs for cover, no obstacle courses, no buzzers, no nothing. Not even a time-out horn you can blare if you need medical assistance in the field. But then again, I suppose you could use that gong for that, so the basis is there. The time-out system is mandatory after all. But still, that alone won't make for an interesting match. Nonetheless, points for trying! Guess once I've really fleshed this all out I'll sell the idea to the city. And once it really goes big, Duisburg will be THE new hot location all around! Mentioned in one breath as Vegas and Dubai or something! Normally the prices I'd take for a license would indeed render the idea exclusive to places like these, but you know what? For Duisburg I'd make a special offer, just because! Also because the LaPaDu would make one hell of an arena, very much in the spirit of the 1st generation venues, in a defunct [insert location]. But it's Duisburg, so it's a steel plant of course, not a racetrack. Just put a wall around it so people don't escape, and off you go! Screw cinema, that shit's gonna be pay per view!
