Another one of those idioms that are popular here: "Let's keep the church within the village." Meaning, let's not go overboard, let's keep it real, let's not get carried away and overdo it.
Whoever built this church, built it outside the village in the first place. Which was a good idea insofar that it is still standing - something that can't be said about many things in the village a bit further upstream.
Unrelated to that, I always find fascinating when there's a place where you see bare stone making up the side of a hill. They're emitting a sense of authority. It's not the same as looking at a plant or something else that grows on the Earth. Not like a pebble or a small rock that you can hold in your hand, and is a piece of the Earth in its own way. In places like this, it's as if you're looking at the Earth itself.
