For my strobe 2 assignment 7 photo’s, I explored the balance between ambient lighting and flash photography with three distinct subjects: Batman and Groot, as well as my beautiful girlfriend, Katie.

After taking multiple photo’s experimenting with each variation and subject I finally got my 9 perfect photos’. Which I started by photographing each subject in three varying lighting settings to understand the relationship between ambient light and balancing flash. My first image within each set was taken using only ambient light to achieve a naturally exposed shot, highlighting the textures and colors of the subjects. This approach showcased the ambient light's ability to gently wrap around each of my subjects, from the natural appearance of Katie's face to the details on my Batman and Groot figurines.

As I reduced the ambient light by adjusting the aperture down by 1-2 stops, my photos naturally became underexposed, which gave off a darker atmosphere. This method allowed me to focus on each of my subject’s size and placement which created depth and a sense of drama in the otherwise a flat lighting scenario. To compensate for the loss of light and to add a creative touch, I used my off-camera flash triggered remotely, varying the flash power from 1/2 to 1/16. Adding my flash illuminated the scenes, enhancing the features of Katie's face, bringing out Batman's heroic posture, and highlighting the textured layers of Groot's form. The controlled bursts of light from the flash not only replaced the exposure lost due to the smaller aperture but also gave me the creative control to sculpt the subjects with light, crafting shadows and highlights that tell a more dynamic visual story.
