Exotic: Gulf Fritillary

One of the butterflies I enjoy most here in Tennessee is one that I did not see in New York at all: the Gulf Fritillary (Agraulis vanilla).

It is not rare here, but the underwing pattern reminds me of the pictures I have seen of tropical rainforest butterflies. Especially on fresh individuals like this one, the delicately bordered, large white spots and the colorful gradient of rose pink to orange is just stunning!
