My first visit to NS’s Altavista District was depressingly late, being wary of its unpredictable & extremely inconsistent nature and anecdotes of weekends wasted shooting nothing. When I finally made the leap of faith, I was rewarded with a memorable introduction.
To kick of my first of what would be 5 trips to the AV, NS 8101 glides through the N&W bracket at Brookneal with export coal for the Port of Norfolk. Positioned at the west end of the signaled portion, the Central of Georgia’s iconic orange ‘wings’ greeted the morning sunlight at Dogwood and the chase was on. I managed to shoot this train at 3 separate locations including the double-bracket at Patrick Henry. I never topped this one in my subsequent visits, but it forever cemented my fondness for the Altavista District
