Country bus
Most Thursdays I try to go somewhere out of the city. This week I took the bus to the pretty market town of Kirkby Lonsdale. Thursday is also the town's weekly market day - it got its market charter in 1227 for a weekly market and regular livestock fairs. It must be popular, as they are still running.
The strange arrangement of seats in front is to accommodate a wheelchair, if required. The suspension can be lowered to allow wheelchair users to get on and off without too much difficulty, and unassisted, if preferred.
The roads are narrow, and twist and turn as country roads often do, following ancient routes that follow old land boundaries - not designed for modern traffic. It slows things down, which is the right way to live. There are a lot of sheep and beef farms as we drive along, and all the animals were lying on the grass - rain isn't far away.
