Sounding bored
These are fallen seed pods from a lime tree. There are 10 species of lime tree in UK, some of which are hybrids. Europeans might call them Linden trees (as in Unter den Linden, in Berlin) or Basswood in the US. The wood is pale and straight-grained and does not warp, making it good for piano keys and sounding boards.
I was surprised to see all these down so early this year. A hard winter follows? Who can tell.
