While the photo that I chose in particular is in b&w as opposed to color, the essence of light still beams through this image. When I look at this, I feel the lightness of childhood. The unadulterated joy. The exuberance of innocence. I snapped this photo on a day when I was feeling weighed down—by my experience as a Black woman/mother/wife in this world. Seeing this “light in motion” unfold right before my eyes, 3 beautiful Black girls enjoying this moment through the lens of their eyes reminded me to take a breath, which upon releasing, I instantly felt lighter. I was brought back to the feelings of complete and absolute freedom, and reminded that sometimes the child in me is just waiting to be let loose.
