Light In Motion

In July 2023, I took this series of photographs on a photo walk called ‘For the Love Of It Oakland’ at the Oakland Museum of California. I was in a small group that was given an Kodak Ektar H35 half frame film camera with the challenge of documenting the theme of summer. It was my 2nd photo walk of the year and it helped me to continue falling back in love with analog photography, my first medium.

I chose these photos to share as my ‘Light in Motion’ submission for the Flickr X Black Women Photographers Grant because summer is the time of year when we have the most amount of sunlight and longer days. Photography literally means to draw with light, so it is fitting and serendipitous that in the midst of taking photos of what I felt represented summer, I was able to capture unique moments in time - click, light passes through the aperture, hits film, captures motion, a moment, all within the blink of an eye. It’s incredibly nostalgic to be able to look back on these images that weren’t captured digitally, because I reflect on the presence I felt in not knowing what would develop until the film was processed. I got to play with light, shadow, composition, and ultimately capture the subjects and scenes in front of me without the immediacy of taking multiple photos on my phone or camera. It allowed me to slow down, not worry so much about the outcome, and just be more free (and light) with the process. Thank you for your consideration.
